 It's funny how instead of saying anything to somebody sitting next to us, be it in lecture or on a bench, we often choose to seal our lips and sit in the uncomfortable silence.

 Exactly. This irony is probably the byproduct of the lifelong American teaching of "never talk to strangers." However, people's silence are most probably the result of our insecurity, our innate fear of being rejected. Or maybe we're just too lazy. Tell's you a lot about the 'American' culture.
